Reduce Stress

It’s no secret that stress is directly linked to a host of health conditions. So why do we often ignore that this could be a great way to reduce what we pay in medical expenses?

Stress is known to be a contributor to heart problems, diabetes, hypertension, anxiety and numerous more health conditions. Stress can affect your sleep patterns, from preventing you from falling asleep, keeping you from staying asleep to giving you restless sleep. Studies show that a healthy amount of sleep can help you maintain a healthy body weight, improve your memory and help you concentrate during the day.

Find ways to relieve stress. Exercising is a great way to relieve stress while providing other health benefits. Try light or brisk walking in an enjoyable environment, such as a local park or by a scenic area in your community. If you have a dog, try taking Fido for a walk. He will get a big benefit from it as well. Yoga is another favorite because it promotes strength in a relaxing atmosphere. Or you might find that reading a book or enjoying a favorite hobby is more conducive to relieving your stress.

Many health advocates argue that this could be one of the most important actions that could positively affect your health, especially in conjunction with a healthy, balanced diet. Consistent, moderate exercise can help you control your weight and help prevent certain diseases and health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer. It can also make your bones stronger and improve your mood.

Limit Alcohol

While usually safe in moderation, alcohol can affect your health both short-term and long-term. Alcohol can change your behavior and affect judgment and coordination. Over time, over-consumption of alcohol can lead to hypertension, an irregular heart beat and stroke. Cirrhosis of the liver, alcoholic hepatitis and pancreatitis are also real dangers with the consistent over-use of alcohol.

Balanced Diet

A balanced diet of healthy, fresh foods can have an exponentially positive impact on your health. A variety of vitamins and minerals can help boost your immunity to illnesses and help protect you from certain diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers. A balanced diet of nutritious foods can also help you maintain a healthy body weight.

Be sure to consume a wide variety of fruits and vegetables of various colors. Include whole grains, nuts, fish and poultry in your meal plans and drink plenty of fresh, clean water. Try to avoid processed, sugary and salty foods.

Limit Salt

Sodium has been on health advocates’ radar for decades, due to its tendency to contribute to chronic health conditions when over-used. Hypertension, nick-named the “silent killer”, is a huge risk factor for those who consume too much sodium. High blood pressure can affect your kidneys and put a strain on your heart and arteries, which could lead to a heart attack or stroke.

The recommended daily amount of sodium is no more than 2,400 mg per day, according to the American Heart Association.

When you are healthy, there’s less risk of becoming ill. And when you’re well, you don’t generally accumulate as much medical debt. Research other ways to stay on top of your health and talk to your doctor about safe ways to overcome risk factors for certain diseases and health conditions.
